Mapping Indonesia’s Position in Social Networks

April 29th, 2009 | Posted in: Indonesian, Today, Web 2.0, ideas | Created by: fajar-jasmin

Just several days ago, I wrote a post in my other blog about China’s decision to block Plurk. In it, I linked to a result from Google Website Trend analysis showing that Indonesia brings the most traffic to the Plurk’s website.

Needless to say, it got me really intrigued. I then play around with it, using Twitter and Facebook as a variable to analyze. And these graphs are the results :

As you can see, Indonesia ranks as the 4th country who brings the most traffic in Facebook, while in Twitter it is listed as the 8th. Combine it with the fact that it’s the biggest traffic contributor for Plurk, and you get the idea that Indonesia is in fact a very prominent country in the global mapping of social networks.

One will then begin to naturally wonder the implication of this fact. For instance, what does it mean for Indonesia ? How can we capitalize on this seemingly-crucial fact that we are renowned users of social networking sites ?

It seems to me that there are two approaches to think about this issue, – classified according to the direction the effects that will inevitably happen to us. First, there is an inward implication, – although not specifically stated -, that people around the world have recognized the fact that us Indonesians are here to stay. It clearly shows that Indonesians are not just some sporadic users of social network. Instead, we are a large group of devoted people who regularly engage in connecting and networking via the Internet. This can only translate as a good thing because bit by bit, Indonesians will then gain stronger voice in this world. On the individual level, people from Indonesia will also get more opportunity to do some serious networking without being associated with any unnecessary facets of the image of a third-world country.

Secondly, and this is the harder part, is the outward responsibility we have with the fact. Now that we are being recognized as prominent entities in Social Networking world, what are we going to do with it ? Remember Peter Parker’s words when he said, “With great power comes great responsibility” ? Of course, it can be argued that we can then make contributions by building our own social networking sites. And we did that successfully, at least to an extent. But for me, it looks like we could go further than that. Why haven’t we incubate some ideas, – and then execute it, which will be useful for the whole world in a global level? You know, products as revolutionary as Blogspot, Wordpress and Twitter.

This is what I offer for you to ponder as I close this fact. I am suggesting that this is the focus that we should develop. Indonesia are so full of talented developers and workers, but few who have the required ability to perform as a brilliant thinker in a conceptual level. And we all know that ideas are where all the great things in life come from.

On Indonesia’s Elections and CTO

April 17th, 2009 | Posted in: Indonesian, Today, ideas | Created by: fajar-jasmin

The year 2009 is marked as the year of elections for us Indonesians. In the early April, we voted for our legislative members, and shortly afterwards the big presidential election will follow closely. This blog is of course not about politics, and will never talk about it, I presume. That’s why I’m not going to contribute to the wildly-crowded, but lively, discussions about Indonesian politics.

What is indeed interesting to be slightly touched is the role of CTO ( Chief of Technology Officer ) in any government’s administration. This issue was brought to the surface by Barack Obama when he announced that he will appoint USA’s first CTO with the following purpose in mind :

“to ensure that our government and all its agencies have the right infrastructure, policies and services for the 21st century. The CTO will ensure the safety of our networks and will lead an interagency effort, working with chief technology and chief information officers of each of the federal agencies, to ensure that they use best-in-class technologies and share best practices.”

As we speak, we know that he is still yet to make good of that promise. America is still waiting to see who’s going to have the first seat as her CTO. Political issues aside, I think that’s one good strategy to adopt for whoever going to run as presidential candidates here in Indonesia. Of course, speaking locally, he / she then will be called a Minister of Technology or something similar.

The job of being a CTO is surely not an easy one, let alone being a CTO for a whole nation. In the corporate world of business, a CTO job will closely reflect or overlap with the more familiar job of CIO ( Chief Information Officer ). An excellent article I read discussed about this and mentioned that :

“the CIO is responsible for ensuring that the company’s information technology investments are aligned with its strategic business objectives. To this end, the CIO has emerged as the key executive for information assets, operations, and policy…… In addition, most CIO responsibilities have expanded beyond the traditional role to include both strategic and tactical duties, as well as corporate policy direction.”

Now take that definition and apply it into a nation, – in this case Indonesia. Cross out the words “company” and “corporate”, and change it with “country” or “national”. You will then get an accurate picture of a very complicated, but challenging, job a CTO would have in our country. This position would demand an individual with a very specific set of skills and educated and experienced in such fields as information technology, electrical engineering, or computer science. He or she must also be a positive leader, an effective communicator (skilled in both listening and speaking), a persuasive negotiator, and a customer-orientated individual.

Again, I am not going to argue about whether such a capable individual exists in our country or not. Instead, I’m going to propose that every presidential candidate of Indonesia will do well to include the role of CTO in his / her planned platform. It is an undeniable truth that nobody’s perfect. So why not incorporate it into your program ? At best, – that is if you’re elected, it would help to work at technology-related issues in Indonesia. There is simply a yearning need for that cannot be ignored. At worst, – if you lose the vote; well, at least it would make your campaign sexy. Think about it.

Indonesia also leading in the world mobile web usage

November 24th, 2008 | Posted in: Indonesian, Today, reference | Created by: Pico Seno

You might already aware of many pessimistic views about internet penetration in Indonesia, compared to Malaysia, Filipina or even small country like Singapore, somehow underestimated. You might also find that most Indonesian preferred into mobile primitive features like SMS and insignificant ring back tones than the border-less world wide web. It also took more than 5 years for big boy like Yahoo to eventually decided to explore more opportunities to go deep with millions of its Indonesian users by established more partnership with local players. With Indonesia current market development of mobile connectivity competition and local infrastructure availability, shall turn those pessimistic views.

SInce the end of 2007, the mobile industry had reached 100 million subscribers via various MNO (Mobile Network Operator) and FWA (Fixed Wireless Access). However it believed that the number doesn’t respectfully correspond to the usage of today’s technology (HSDPA, mobile web), until a leading mobile browser maker, Opera, released reports that SouthEast Asia is leading in mobile web usage and growth.

It reported that Indonesia ranks first in SouthEast Asia (and second worldwide) in usage with almost 330% user growth and 827% page view growth in 2008. Followed by Malaysia with 462.6%  user growth and 474.5% page view growth. Obviously, more Indonesian mobile subscribers are using their phone to go online today.

In many of Southeast Asian countries the mobile Web exists not because it complements existing means of access, but rather because it replaces them. Page view growth and pages per user are an interesting metric to see how much people use Opera Mini to browse the Web. It is interesting to note that page views per user in Indonesia and the Philippines are significantly higher than the worldwide numbers. In fact page views grew more than 1120% in the Philippines this year.

The report geographic focus is on Southeast Asia, where we see Google as the dominant player in the search engine space and Friendster as the premier social-networking site, with hi5 coming in second. Nokia is dominant in the region, with brands like Sony Ericsson and Huawei competing for a distant second place. Here’s the highlight.

  • Indonesia and Malaysia lead the way for mobile Web adoption, followed by Thailand and Brunei.
  • Indonesia leads the top 9 countries in page views, with each user browsing 358 pages on average in October 2008, well above the global average.
  • Growth rates are soaring: Malaysia leads the top 9 with 462.6% growth in users this year, followed by the Philippines (396.4% growth) and Indonesia (329.5% growth.
  • In Southeast Asia, among mobile Web users, Google is the dominant player in the search engine space, with Yahoo and Live Search vying for second place.
  • Friendster is the premier social-networking site in the region, with hi5 coming in second.
  • Nokia is dominant in the region, with brands like Sony Ericsson and Huawei competing for a distant second place.

On top sites rank by Indonesian unique users, Facebook made a big jump entering the list this month. The report also predicted about Facebook beat Friendster in the near future, “It will be interesting to see if Facebook will affect the dominance of Friendster in Indonesia”. Here’s the complete top sites viewed via  mobile:

  1. friendster.com
  2. google.com
  3. gamejump.com (back on the list)
  4. facebook.com (new)
  5. yahoo.com (back on the list)
  6. waptrick.com (new)
  7. peperonity.com (down from 4)
  8. wikipedia.org (down from 5)
  9. getjar.com (back on the list)
  10. gratisindo.com (down from 6)

and here is the top handsets for October 2008 (which use the Opera Browser):

  1. Nokia 6600
  2. Nokia N70
  3. Nokia 3230
  4. Nokia 7610
  5. Nokia N73
  6. Nokia 6300
  7. Sony Ericsson W200i
  8. Nokia 5310
  9. Sony Ericsson K750i
  10. Sony Ericsson K510i

It seems (Indonesia) mobile industry really helps bridging the gap of internet infrastructure thus accelerates nation-wide internet penetration (at least Opera enjoys it). I wonder if Blackberry will be listed in top handsets list by the end of 2008, noted that all major GSM operators offers Blackberry with affordable monthly plan connection package.

These development gave new insight of opportunities in mobile web, conventional web and mobile application. Simply develop “m” as your subdomain will extend your audience to mobile web users. You don’t even have to develop a special java application to comply the web communication model, most recognized format for mobile web is XHTML which took an article of web standards. Have you xhtml-ized your site?

For me, I prefer desktop/notebook view, using Sony Ericsson G502 as modem (traveling) or  view directly via NetFront Browser (pre-installed) with HSDPA connection. Quite fast!

An interview with Indonesia’s very own WP-themes virtuoso

October 25th, 2008 | Posted in: Indonesian, ideas | Created by: fajar-jasmin

Nurudin Jauhari is arguably one of the most productive Wordpress theme maker, not only in Indonesia, but in the world as well.  His works and ideas my be seen in his personal blog, his Bahasa Indonesia blog, and his professional website.  Followings are the excerpts of my interview with him :

———————————

Q : What is your general view about Internet trends and related developments in general ?  What things in particular are actual and need keeping up with ?

A : I personally think that especially in the last 10 years, the Internet has grown more than twice the scope it had when it was first introduced in the 80s.  So many new things came all of a sudden, created a boom and became a trend.  We now have so many alternative sources of information, including blogs which are getting more and more acceptance from the general public.  Also, in various ways, the business aspect has started to kick in : people are now selling things online, the online-advertising field is growing, and the genesis of social media / website, web 2.0, AJAX and Flash.  These things might well be unthinkable in the early 90s.  In fact, if I remember correctly, I read somewhere that Bill Gates himself once expressed his lack of faith of Internet.  In the end, he changed his mind and joined the crowd.

Q :  Specifically, what about the related development of things in Indonesia ?  Is it moving in the same direction as global Internet growth ?

A :  Technologically speaking, our country is in the same road with the global trends.  What remains high for now is the cost, which somehow limits the growth to Java, Bali and several big cities in the other islands.  I think the government needs to help to introduce the technology to broader audience and society.  On the other hand, when we talk about software implementation, I think our country can be considered advanced enough.  There are a lot of excellent designers and programmers from our nation.  I even recall that some of our college students have won several times the contests in Google Code.

Q :  As one of the most productive Wordpress theme maker in the field, how do you view blogs as a form of media ?  What are its potentials and weakness ?

A :  Blogging, which started as a somewhat narcissistic kind of media, has evolved to be a business in itself.  This business opportunity enticed a lot of people to try their hands at it.  Even Kompas ( a famous Indonesian newspaper ) and Detik ( a prominent Indonesian news portal ) have launched their blogs.  This implies that blogs enable people to read an issue from various viewpoints.  I think it’s understandable if a lot of blogs are written subjectively.  On the other hand, I think blogs could be a lot more productive and supported the real, social life.  Just like the recent Blog Action Day with its poverty theme, bloggers could explore ways to help solve the problem.  Of course, weaknesses are always there, but it will get better over time.

Q :  Elaborating more on what you mentioned, do you think blogging is still relevant to be a focus in, say, 5 years from now ?

A :  Yes, I feel so.  Probably there will be changes in the form or methods, just like Microblogging as we know now, – Twitter, Tumblr, Plurk, Jaiku, etc.  It is actually a blog platform where people can blog by brief messages, usually limited below 150 characters.  It’s also accessible via various mobile medias like mobile phones, Blackberry, iPhone and other gadgets.

Q :  Can blogging be an earning profession that pays ?  What are your suggestions to people who wants to blog professionally ?

A :  It really depends on the person.  A lot of bloggers write just because they want to write, others do it because they want to extend their contact networks.  Still, others have pure business motives, offering useful services and all.  My personal suggestions for those who want to make blogging an occupation, be a unique blogger, write everything tied in a theme.  For example, if you want to write about mobile phones, do it without spilling into laptops.  Similarly, focus in design if that’s your niche, this will gain you loyal readers who are getting real benefits from your blog.  Most importantly, avoid copy/pasting from other sources and be original.  Get into the network by leaving positive comments in other blogs or joining forums like wordpressrepublik.com.

Q :  What’s the role of public enthusiasm in the future of blogging ?  How could such enthusiasm be nurtured ?  What about the government’s part in this ?

A :  I think the enthusiasm is quite high.  Indonesian bloggers seem to have a good position, – both in quantity and quality.  If we’re talking about comparison, we are on the same level as our counterparts in Australia ( info from Metro TV, e-lifestyle, Sunday 19 Oct. 2008 ).  Almost in every town there is a blogger community, – in my city it is BloggerNgalam.com.  Some of them are quite active, even involving themselves in social activities.  I feel that this method works well in igniting strong interests to blog.  As to the government, they can take part as long as it will not be spun into some projects with unclear directions.  Like for now, we can see some schools have started to require their students to have their own blogs.  I think it’s a good idea.

Q :  What is the correlation between blogging and the proportionally-low internet coverage in Indonesia ?  Which should come first :  blogging to incite interests, or infrastructure building ?

A :  I think they should run simultaneously.  Just like the way both of our feet walk harmoniously, they should go together.  They are closely related to each other, in spite of the different frameworks.  They do not need to “agree” with each other, but have to work in one agreement.

Q :  What sparked your interest to Internet and blogging at the first place ?

A :  All I wanted to do was documenting my daily life.  Then I started to share what I can do, which is Wordpress design.

Q :  What are your daily activities beside blogging ?

A :  I am currently still working as a staff in a property company in Malang.  I wish to be able to devote my time totally to blogging and freelance work in the year 2009.  Apart from that, I am also an active member of my company’s futsal squad.

Q :  How do you do your time management between blogging, work and your personal life ?

A :  I only keep one thing in mind, – to act professionally.  When I’m at work, I work as hard as I can ( Though I may steal some time to read several blogs in my feed reader ).  For blogging, I don’t have a specially-defined schedule.  Usually it’s done in the morning before office, – or in the afternoon in between family time.  My special time for family is in weekends, holidays and when we dine together.  I try to keep them balanced.

Q :  Apart from designing free, downloadable Wordpress themes; what business model do you adopt ?  Any suggestions in layman terms ?

A :  I sell services.  They could be design, programming, content-writing and affiliates programs.  You could also sell stuffs online, like books, clothing, household equipments and others.  There is no secret success recipe in the Internet.  All you need to do is doing your very best and believe that the success is within your reach.

Q :  What about the role of community for Internet practitioners like you ?

A :  I actively engage in several forums, both domestic and international.  We also have regular lively discussions via Yahoo Messenger or GTalk.

NET Lately (March – April)

April 30th, 2008 | Posted in: Indonesian, Projects | Created by: Pico Seno

We did not post any update last month, but yes we do have updates.

On services, we proud to share about new annual contract signed by General Hotel Management (GHM) Bali Group for newsletter service. We only had very limited time before decision then the option for going CRM was not even mentioned. I believe they have already their CRM and having our service is part of it. We value the opportunities and trusts.

Another new client to welcome is PT Borneo Indobara. Still ongoing process, we are producing a company profile of this Sinar Mas subsidiary.

The Indonesian web 2.0 is still a future on making wealth but the tick to it is getting closer everyday, so we managed to involve in a web 2.0 kind of service project. Also involved in this project: Aria Rajasa from the Rajasa Web and Graphic Company , Harry from Digital Grafis and Muswardi from our side. We prepare to launch the first alpha by the end of May 2008. We think this service is critical for photography, advertising, design and media industry. Please leave your name and email on comment to get invited.

We still work our best for Dewi Lestari website. My apology for her fans that we can not release it yet. But we promise that you can enjoy the most of Dewi’s website next month just before she launch her new work “Rectoverso“. Should you have suggestion about the site, please leave comment on this post.

In case you in design related industry, you probably want to check out D-EyeView , a community portal for people who think design. Peter Yogan, co-founder of d-eyeview, believes that this community will help people understand the essential of design regardless what branch a designer is in. NET implemented a community portal for his idea. Now, d-eyeview has over 300 active members.

The NET infrastructure is getting better! NET and Globalport signed an strategic partnership agreement on complimentary services. Meaning we have tons bits of bandwidth to our servers locally and internationally, while they can bundle our our resources in their services.

This can be considered as review. Sadly, we aren’t satisfied with MWN hosting service. As I post this, the NET website is still hosted on an MWN server along with few client’s. We use their service since 2003, apparently they failed to put value in this relationship. I bet you hardly visit here and one of many reason could be, you don’t get a nice experience by visiting a slow web blog of NET. Even google hardly reach this site because low bandwidth and high server load. We will move shortly!

For other hosting service, I still hope that dreamhost always deliver the best to meet our requirement.

I guess that’s all in this two months. Tell me if I miss anything.

*Updates: I forgot this important update. We moved out from Graha MIK due to building ownership change. Now, we operate everything from Komplek Samudera Indonesia N0. 18, Pasar Minggu, however the official mailing address will remains and will last in the next three months. We are not rushing to get new office in the business district because we think the Pasar Minggu is sufficient for today daily operation.

We consider…

February 27th, 2008 | Posted in: Indonesian, Today | Created by: Pico Seno

or should I say: I consider…

  • Microsoft Surface is best thing happened (not available in local store yet) this year on User Interface.
  • Google Grand Central for next telco services platform and Android for the next mobile (handset) platform
  • Macbook Air , Apple TV and iTunes made step for the term social devices. Yes they believe that each device is a social unit, but manageable
  • Most of corporate IT div were lost. Traditional marketers (you) are no better. Technology entrepreneurs are leading, riding the bull somewhere.
  • Indonesian government doesn’t have, even a tiny bit idea of what’s going on with technology for people today… nor for themself. And more…
  • hate Indonesian cartels, ignorant, and selfish narrow-minded who ask us present the web development
  • Using Drupal more
  • Building OpenSocial and Facebook Application sample
  • To earn money when you ask for what’s worth days research. Who’s paying? It is yours to resolve.
  • Animals are trustworthy, however they probably slow in understanding human language.
  • Indonesian will waste so much bandwidth this year due to incapability of the government and the laziness of the telco cartel.

Well… few said

New Websites – September

October 2nd, 2007 | Posted in: Indonesian, Projects | Created by: Pico Seno

Last month we launched three websites silently. Just trying to interact with people more often on the internet. Those three generate small traffic in a month but adequate for starter: about 600 unique visitors, 15.500 pageviews.

Hopefully we can do a lot better this month. Those three are:

40sale 40sale.com

is a tool for budget shoping people who like to view all promotion programs before they set which direction to shop. The site also does favor for outlet/brand who wants to reach more on specified target.

We plan to boost more traffic especially to this 40sale, as it should be great referrences to users. We also invites outlets/brands to sign up for services and encourage them to do self-entry as often as they could. If this works, nobody ever lose great promo program again.

More to do on interfaces and engine, definitely. We do as it evolve.

indohype Indohype.com

Through this site we practicing content writing, seo, adsensing, and many more around web content publishing. All topics are Indonesian, also in Indonesia language. Last month top search keyword from google is Hilyani, the young who won Wajah Femina 2007.

lautku Cerita Laut

We love our country and all “waterever” surrounding its thousands lands. Yet there are very few information about Indonesian Maritime and Marine on internet. We just trying. Again, this site also be practicing content publishing place for us.

viral invitation – tell your friend feature (process)

October 12th, 2006 | Posted in: Indonesian, Production | Created by: Pico Seno

on a discussion with rizzblow and catur_bharata, we agreed about how viral facility should be conducted.

three types of viral:
- ‘tell your friend’ link on every entries (posts)
- ‘tell your friend’ form after posting
- invitation to check the 10yearsfromnow.com after registration and all the time (in social networking term)

about ‘the your friend’
- it be an email
- the ‘from field’ is user name (and email address)
- can be to many recipients
- the subject and body will be editable also the signature
- the default body will be the whole entry (not link but we also can put link to it anyway)
- signature is user name
- we will attach few compelling links below the signature or in the body (we have not decided yet), such as see more from [users] and see more on these [tag1], [tag2]
